2017 MLB Trade Deadline is Confusing This Year
2017 MLB Trade Deadline is rapidly approaching, and this may well be the most confusing year yet. Why?
Because of the two wildcard berths available for the playoffs, and because of the league balance, especially in the American League, very few teams are “out of it” as July comes to a close. In fact, in the American League, the team with the worst record is still only 7 ½ games out of a playoff berth. In the National League there are five teams which could be considered out of it, and thus sellers at the deadline, but still, there is a drastic shortage of “sellers” this late in the proceedings.
So there is a great amount of uncertainty with two weeks to go. Players most likely to be traded by July 31st, in no particular order, are:
- Marcell Ozuna, LF, Miami
- Jose Quintana, SP, White Sox
- Justin Upton, LF, Detroit
- Yonder Alonso, 1B, Oakland
- Addison Reed, RP, Mets
- Johnny Cueto, SP, San Francisco
- Sonny Gray, SP, Oakland
- Curtis Granderson, CF, Mets
- Todd Frazier 3B, White Sox
- Jay Bruce, RF, Mets
- David Robertson, RP, White Sox
- Brad Hand, RP, San Diego
It’s an interesting year in a number of ways. Most playoff-bound teams are looking for starting pitching and yet in 2017, the starting pitching available is somewhat mediocre, meaning higher-than-justified prices will be paid for those starting pitchers who are traded. In fact, because the buyers far outnumber the sellers, anyone traded will command a premium price, making this, perhaps, one of the most over-valued groups of traded players in the history of Major League baseball. It is highly debatable whether any of these players rumored to be traded will have any positive impact for a team looking to make a stretch drive.
So we wait and we watch as the 2017 MLB Trade Deadline approaches. The All-Star break, and the eight games played before the deadline, will do nothing to clear the muddied waters. We know about all we are going to know right now.
Now we just wait and watch! No matter what happens, it promises to be interesting.
