MLB Steals The Spotlight

Major League Baseball managed to push aside the news cycle about NFL free agency with a huge story yesterday coming out of Los Angeles.

The Dodgers announced that the Magic Johnson-led investment group had the winning bid in purchasing the Los Angeles Dodgers at $2.15 billion.  This story is huge on so many levels that it is hard to know where to begin.

The Dodgers, that legendary team owned by the warring McCourts, was thought to be valued at $1.6 billion, so when bids were submitted by three different investment groups it was believed that the winning bid would be in that neighborhood.  No one saw $2.5 billion as a possibility and it literally shook up the standards for future purchases of Major League teams.

Not only that, but Major League Baseball, which has to approve the sale, will sign on the dotted line about as fast as has ever been done because the League now has a respected black ex-player as an owner and that can only be a huge benefit as far as publicity for the League.  Expect this transaction to be approved in record time by the League.

What has been overshadowed by this news is the fact that the 2012 season has already begun.  Seattle and Oakland have split a two-game series in Japan and are now heading back to Arizona for one more week of practice before the regular season begins for all teams on April 4-5.

The Mariners won the first game on Wednesday 3-1 and Oakland won Thursday 4-1, so the 2012 season has officially begun.  Most teams are still trying to get down to the 25-man roster for opening day so there should be quite a few transactions still to happen in the next four or five days.
