Former Mets Star Carlos Beltran Lists NY Home After Signing With St. Louis

Baseball careers play out at warp speed, which explains how Carlos Beltran — whom the New York Mets made the highest-paid center fielder in 2005 with a $119 million contract — is no longer in New York.

Still a fine player, Beltran was traded last season to San Francisco for the pennant chase and then signed a two-year, $25 million deal with the St. Louis Cardinals.

He’s no longer the coveted free-agent around whom the Mets sought to build a World Series team. And it doesn’t look like the native Puerto Rican is coming back to New York for any extended stays.

Beltran has listed his Long Island home for $5.8 million. Beltran bought the 8,800-square-foot home for $4.25 million in 2005 and was the first owner of the Southampton-style Colonial, which boasts 7 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, a home theater, swimming pool, exercise room and bar on a private, 2-acre lot.

Like many Mets stars, including former players Darryl Strawberry, Bobby Ojeda and Doc Gooden, Beltran found comfort in Sands Point, the wooded, low-key but exclusive section of Port Washington on the north shore of Long Island. In fact, during an 2006 interview with the Newsday, Beltran confessed that Manhattan life was too hectic for him and that he loved walking out of his Sands Point home and seeing all the trees.

Despite competition among some high-end listings in Sands Point, Beltran’s well-appointed home and the trees might be just the ticket for a classy, well-appointed home that’s just a few miles from Manhattan — or a 30-minute train ride to Citi Field, where Beltran’s All-Star hitting might be missed this season by his former team.
