NBA Board of Governors Recommend Kings Stay in Sacramento

NBA BOARD OF GOVERNORS RECOMMEND KINGS STAY IN SACRAMENTO

In a stunning announcement, the NBA Board of Governors Relocation Committee recommended that the Kings should not be sold to a Seattle group headed by Chris Hansen and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

A vote of all NBA owners will not happen until May 13th, but all indications are that they will follow the Board’s recommendation.

Elation was the emotion of the day in Sacramento.  The Mayor of Sacramento, former NBA great Kevin Johnson, has been working hard for months to prevent the sale and relocation of the Kings, and it appears that his efforts will now be rewarded.  Johnson organized a group of investors led by software company tycoon Vivek Ranadive. The NBA was also impressed with the Sacramento downtown plaza proposal that includes $258 million in public subsidies.

It should be noted that this does not guarantee anything at this moment.  The League must still convince the Maloofs not to sell to the Seattle group, and predicting what the Maloofs will do is risky business. However, chances now appear excellent that the Board will be able to convince the Maloofs that it is in everyone’s best interest that the Kings remain where they are.

This is a heartbreak for the Seattle group which has worked so hard for over a year to make sure that Seattle regains an NBA team after losing the Sonics to Oklahoma City.  The good news, if it can be called that, is that Seattle has now proven that an arena will be built and there is sufficient city support so that the next time a team becomes available, whether by a move or expansion, that Seattle will be awarded a team.
