- Deron Williams Traded to the New Jersey Nets

The New Jersey Nets, having lost out on the Carmelo Anthony sweepstakes, pulled the trigger on a trade with the Utah Jazz today.  Utah agreed to send All-Star point guard Deron Williams to New Jersey. In exchange the Nets will send Derrick Favors, Devin Harris and two first-round draft picks to Utah.  Reportedly $3 million will also be sent to Utah.

The Nets are also close to trading Troy Murphy to Golden State in exchange for Brandan Wright and center Dan Gadzuric.  When the smoke finally clears it is apparent that the Nets have seriously upgraded their team despite previous efforts to land Anthony.

Williams had been vocal about his displeasure with Utah and it has been speculated that his poor relationship with Jerry Sloan led to the coach’s departure earlier this month.  It is too early to guess whether Williams will sign a contract extension with the Nets or whether he will just play out his contract and enter free agency, but for now the Nets have landed one of the premier point guards in the NBA.

So far this season Williams is averaging 21.3 ppg and 9.7 assists, amongst the league leaders in both categories.  At first glance this trade appears to be beneficial to both teams as Utah picked up two quality players and now have an extra first-round draft choice in 2011 and 2012.
